What Stands Between You and God?

“Yahushua felt genuine love for this man as he looked at him. ‘You lack only one thing,’ he told him. ‘Go and sell all you have and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me’ ” Mark 10:21 (NLT).

I really love how the this verse begins: “Yahushua felt genuine love for this man.” This is exactly how God feels about each and every one of us. He is eager to have us follow Him and become His disciples; however, He asks for a heavy price.

Some people believe that this story is simply about money and greed, but this story goes far beyond that. You see, what Yahushua is saying is that we must give up everything we cherish, everything we hold dear; we must give up everything that stands between us and God in order to follow Yahushua. The most important thing to this wealthy man was money, and money is what was keeping Him from fully committing His life to God; that’s why Yahushua told him that he must give up His money.

Notice that Yahushua didn’t say, “Give up most of your money, and then you’ll be ready to follow Me;” no, Yahushua said, “Sell everything! Give it to the poor, and follow Me.” Yahushua was calling him to give up everything that stood between himself and an intimate relationship with God.

And, today, Yahushua is calling you and me to give up everything that stands between us and an intimate relationship with Him, to sell everything that is a barrier between us and God, and to follow Him. This is what I call radical Christianity, where we lay down the idols we have put above God, throw them out, and follow Yahushua with reckless abandon.

So, the question at hand is this: Are you ready to make that kind of commitment or will you, like the rich man, walk away from this priceless opportunity to follow Christ wholeheartedly and without hesitation? Are you ready to follow Yahushua with reckless abandon?
